The Teatro Colon was on our list of places to visit while in Buenos Aires and getting tickets for a guided tour of the theatre was one of the first things we did. The guide was pretty good until she lost us (I had stopped to take some photographs with a couple of others!). We took the opportunity to spend a bit more time in the main theatre before heading off.

More photographs inside.

The Teatro Colon is the main opera house in Buenos Aires and is considered to be acoustically one of the best concert venues in the world. The current theatre was built (it took 20 years to build) and opened on the 25th of May in 1908 and replaced an older, smaller theatre with the same name. In more recent times the theatre's deterioration was ebcoming more evident and it was closed from 2006 to 2010 for restoration.

Construction of the current theatre was delayed on numerous occasions due to financial difficulties, arguments relating to the location and the death of the architect, Francesco Tamburini. The stage measures 20 meters in width, 15 meters in height and 20 meters in depth.

Apart from the main theatre, the tour takes you through the main halls and a number of the other rooms including the golden hall. The stained glass windows and ceilings are stunning. Other features include the sculptures, busts and bas-relief that are visible in almost every room.

All these photographs were taken with a Canon 5D Mark III and the Canon 24-105mm lens. Unfortunately I was not allowed to take a tripod into the theatre and had to push up the ISO to take handheld photographs. I would have preferred to have the tripod! I was quite happy with the panorama (1st photograph on this post) because I managed to get it without using a tripod.
