Little Woodpecker - Pantanal, Brazil

The Little Woodpecker was one of three woodpeckers that I was able to photograph in the Pantanla. I had a couple of good, clear sightings of this species and was able to photograph it at length. It was moving around amongst some small trees and feeding on what looked like some sort of larvae. Fortunately there weren't too many leaves on the branches and I was able to get a few clear shots.

More photographs inside.

It was feeding on a palm tree when I first saw it. Its presence was given away by the noise it made when it pecked at the bark in search of prey. The colour of its plumage camouflaged it pretty well and it was quite hard to find amongst the dry leaves. It had quite a successful morning in terms of feeding as it had something in its beak in most of the photographs I took.

I think this is the female of the species as it is missing the red cap which is found on males. Although the little woodpecker is often seen in pairs, I didn't observe a second bird during my two sightings. They are also known to join mixed species flocks. This species has a large range and a number of sub-species have been identified.

These photographs were taken with the 100-400mm lens mounted on a Canon 7D. As usual, a 600mm lens would have been handy! The light was quite bright and directional which made exposure a bit harder than usual. The camera was hand held for all these photographs.
