14/52 - Coke

Coke
Coke

This photograph appeared on strobist a while ago and I was amazed at how "different" it was. I had never seen "Coke" photographed like this before. I have been meaning to try and reproduce this shot since then but hadn't got around to it for one reason or another. Since the point of my project 52 is to learn to light, I thought of shooting it for this weeks entry.

Burgess Falls - Hazelbrook, Australia

Burgess Falls - Hazelbrook, Australia
Burgess Falls - Hazelbrook, Australia

Last Wednesday was Australia day and a public holiday in Sydney. We decided to make the most of it and head up to the blue mountains for a walk. It was supposed to be 40 degrees in Sydney and the beaches would have been packed so we were looking forward to some cooler weather and fewer people. I had found a couple of waterfalls, which were away from the usual tourist route, some time ago and we thought we'd visit them.

13/52 - Jean Paul Gaultier

My wife got a new bottle of perfume recently and I decided to use it as this weeks shot for the project. I feel my lighting skills are improving because I can setup the lights and capture the photograph I have in mind, a lot faster now. This again, was a two light setup. The most difficult part of it was getting the background light just right. In hind sight, I think a bigger part of the background should have been lit.

The Globe Theatre - London, England

The Globe Theatre - London, England
The Globe Theatre - London, England

When Sam Wanamaker, an American actor and director, visited the site of the original globe he was disappointed that he couldn't find a more lasting memorial to Shakespeare's work. He formed what is now the Shakespeare Globe Trust in 1970 and construction on the Globe Theatre started in 1987 on the south bank of the Thames. The theatre is a dedicated to exploring Shakespeare's works and the playhouse for which he wrote, through performance and education.

12/52 - Techy

Techy - A Keyboard from an iMac
Techy - A Keyboard from an iMac

I found it pretty hard to come up with an idea for this weeks shot........ big surprise! I don't know how photographers doing project 365s get ideas for photographs everyday.

Since I've been using warm light for most of the photographs I've taken for this project so far, I decided to mix things up a bit and go for some cooler coloured lighting for this shot. I thought of using a CTB gel to light this keyboard and give it a "techy" sort of feel. What do you think?

Murano, a group of small islands situated about fifteen minutes by vaporetto from St Marks square, is famous for its glass makers. Glass making start in Murano in 1291 when the Venetian republic ordered all glass makers off the main islands fearing the foundries would would cause fires and destroyed the wooden buildings in Venice. Today, glass making remains the main industry on the island.

11/52 - Goodnite

Goodnite - Melody Gardot
Goodnite - Melody Gardot

I wanted to take a photograph of an iPod for this weeks entry in my project 52 but wasn't sure how I was going to compose it or light it. It clicked when I was flipping through a jazz playlist on the iPod and came across Goodnite by Melody Gardot. I decided to go for a fairly dark image with the iPod on one side and bokeh in warm colours filling up the other.  I'm quite happy with the image but in hindsight there are a few improvements I could have made.

Leura Cascades - Blue Mountains, Australia

Leura Cascades - Blue Mountains, Australia
Leura Cascades - Blue Mountains, Australia

I went up to the Blue Mountains with Dean Toh last weekend to shoot the Leura Cascades. It was a 4.00AM start for us, as we wanted to make it up there while the light was good. The waterfall, as the name implies, is a series of small drops along a rocky slope. The largest of the drops is a couple of meters in height.

10/52 - One for the Ashes

Cricket - One for the Ashes

I thought I'd do a "Cricket" shot this week as the Ashes are in Sydney.

The fifth test got underway in front of a packed SCG yesterday. The weather didn't look too promising and I wasn't sure if there would be much play. Although the cricket was alright, the atmosphere at the ground was terrible. I actually wasn't too disappointed when rain brought an end to the days play a little while after tea. Although there were a huge number of English supporters in attendance, I can't recall hearing the Barmy Army actually singing. I guess the fact that the Police were escorting supporters out of the venue at the drop of a hat didn't help matters in that regard.

New Year's Day Fireworks - Sydney, Australia

New Year's Day Fireworks - Sydney, Australia
New Year's Day Fireworks - Sydney, Australia

New Years eve celebrations were fairly low key this year. I was at a friends place for a barbecue dinner followed by fireworks on the harbour. People usually get to the foreshore fairly early (8.00 - 9.00 in the morning...) and claim spots for their chairs and picnic blankets. We couldn't be bothered going through all of that and ended up on leaving home at around 10.30 PM.

More images after the jump. Happy New Year everyone.
